On Writing: Rosanna Leo’s Venture into Contemporary Romance

Note:  From time-to-time, I’ll be blogging about writing.  Some of these blogs will feature an author and his/her body of work, some might address an aspect of the writing process (probably as I am dealing/struggling with it in my current work-in-progress), and some might simply be me being a fan-girl over an author’s current release.

The opinions I express in these blogs will be subjective.  I’m not trying to take that step back and be objective, because reading and writing is very personal to me. My approaches to writing, editing, and critiquing have been formed over a long life of reading, graduating with a degree in English, several professional editing positions, and twenty years plus of writing fiction.

Today’s  premier “On Writing” blog is about Rosanna Leo, a best-selling paranormal and fantasy author, who has a new contemporary romance coming out with nary a shifter or a god or goddess in the mix. Vice will be released tomorrow, September 22nd by Samhain Publishing.

So, the question is — can a popular paranormal romance author make the shift to contemporary and take her fan base with her?  My opinion is “yes.” Read on and find out why.

Remember what I said above about being subjective in these blog pieces?  So, in the spirit of full disclosure, let me just say I’ve known Rosanna Leo for years – as a fellow author at Liquid Silver Books, as someone whose books I’ve critiqued and bought and read, and as a friend on social media. So, I might be a tad bit prejudiced, but then again  … not. Why?

Because … Quality always tells.

Vice_EPUBI like and appreciate Rosanna’s writing whether it’s her paranormal series Gemini Island Shifters or her myth-based fantasy series … and her recent venture into contemporary romance with Vice hasn’t changed my opinion; in fact, it has strengthened my admiration for her work.

When Rosanna finished Vice, and before she submitted it to publishers, she asked me to read it.  She had concerns; she wasn’t sure her fans who loved her shifters and gods and goddesses’ books would follow her into contemporary romance, especially one addressing serious emotional issues due to gambling addiction.

Understanding those concerns (I had similar ones when I took the side trip into scifi romance), I agreed to read the book and give her my honest opinion.  After I finished, this is the author blurb I gave her to use in promotion BEFORE it was submitted or accepted by a publisher:

Rosanna Leo’s Vice is the story of Kate and Liam, two people damaged by their pasts who meet as adversaries and quickly become lovers.  The sex is burn-the-sheets hot. Their interactions are fraught with deep needs and even deeper desires. But explosive chemistry isn’t everything. How Kate and Liam find their way out of the soul-sucking clutches of their pasts and into a future together makes for one powerful and emotionally satisfying story.  I’ll read anything Ms. Leo writes. She’s that good.

“I’ll read anything she writes.”  That sentence was my answer to Rosanna’s concerns about her fan base abandoning her – they shouldn’t.

The book was good, probably the best work I’ve ever read of hers, and Samhain acknowledged that by contracting it.

What makes her paranormal and myth-based fantasies so good also translates to her first contemporary:  Rosanna knows how to plot, knows how to tug the reader’s emotions, and, simply put, knows how to write a damn good book.

Quality always wins.

And you know it wins with me since I don’t usually read straight contemporary romance, especially where there’s a potential for angst.  And Vice had the angst-potential in spades. First, there’s the heroine Kate who’s emotionally damaged by a parent’s addiction to gambling and refuses to have anything to do with gambling in any way, shape, or form. Enter the hero Liam who, after a troubled and mostly loveless childhood, found success and self-worth through his ownership of  casinos. Add in the instant physical attraction between Kate and Liam which might not be enough to overcome their emotional baggage, and you have the recipe for angst to the nth degree.

The fact that Rosanna still pulled me in and kept me reading until the HEA is a testament to her writing ability.

Here is what I said to her in my page and a half (single-spaced!!) comments on the story – – Note: Slight Spoiler Alert:

The emotional damage of Liam and Kate comes across strongly. I’m happy– and was relieved quite frankly — they found their way through the hot sex and to their real feelings. I got worried when Kate’s vaunted empathy and patience ran out and she couldn’t let Liam work through the issue she couldn’t live in his world of Vice. I think he was on his way there, but she’d had enough. Her damage from her father was just too much – she couldn’t lose anything else and not gain something she needed (losing her friends was the kicker). I understood why she left.  It was a very effective crisis – and my stomach hurt.

BTW I don’t read angst stories usually — and this story has a lot of it — but you also temper it with the very real physical attraction and love that comes through when they interact.  I chuckled at some of their early repartee — Kate picketing his casino was a hoot and then befriending his security was priceless. I loved that Liam protected her even after she left him – that was true love if I ever saw it. And she’d have come around to going back sooner if she’d read he was selling his businesses – so you’re handling of that was well done– it made them coming back together so much stronger.

So, the angst worked in this case – it was not made up or fabricated as many authors often do – I felt it and hurt for and with them and was very very happy when I got to The End and they were together.

In Vice, the emotions read true, not made up to the point of over-wrought drama such as the soap operas I used to watch when I was home sick from school. It takes a very good writer to handle the characters’ extreme emotions and traumatic pasts and their evolution out of them and not fall off that tightrope into melodrama.

Rosanna brings to her contemporary writing the same voice, the same deft handling of plot and characterization, and the same straight-forward writing style she uses in her paranormal and fantasy books.

So, to all the Rosanna Leo fans of her paranormal and fantasy novels, give Vice a try. I’m fairly sure you’ll get the same satisfying read from it as you do her other books.  And if you are new to Rosanna’s writing, you can’t go wrong with Vice – it’s a winner.

Quality always rises to the top.

He’s much more than a bad habit.

As a Vegas singer and volunteer counselor, Kate Callender has experienced life on both sides of Sin City’s bright lights. The thrill of performing, and gambling’s devastating effect on the addicts’ families.

Liam Doyle is just the kind of man she despises—a handsome, enigmatic businessman with a knack for seducing customers into his casino hotels. Determined to put a lid on his growing influence, she prepares to picket the opening of his newest casino, Vice.

When Liam spots the lone protester hassling his customers, annoyance wars with instant attraction. And he quickly discovers the leggy redhead not only can’t be bought, she tempts him the way the sound of a roulette wheel lures a gambler.

They are natural enemies, but when a vile attack sparks Liam’s protective instincts, they begin a sexual odyssey that dances on the edge of addiction. Dangerously close to losing control…and losing themselves.

He meandered toward her and forced a smile. “You seem to have had a busy day.”

She whipped around and her eyes widened. He saw her give him a quick once-over. Did she like what she saw? Interesting. There was some perverse satisfaction in that.

“It has been busy.” She narrowed her hazel eyes at him. “Do you work here?”

So, she didn’t recognize him. Good. “Yes, ma’am, I do.” He crossed his arms over his chest and nodded, noting how her gaze dropped to his exposed forearms. Her lips parted. Clearly, working out had its merits. “And word inside is you’ve upset the big boss.”

Her nostrils flared as she dragged her gaze away from his arms. “About time.” She put her sign down and picked up her purse. “Do you know Liam Doyle?”

“I’ve heard one or two things about him.”

She stepped closer and her lips did the most amazing thing, curling into a flirtatious semi-smile. “I don’t suppose you’d be willing to share them with me? The other guy kept on sucking up about him as if he was wearing a wire.” She paused. “You’re not wearing a wire, are you?”

He laughed out loud. He couldn’t help it. This was way too much fun. He sidled close to her, leaned in conspiratorially, and put a hand on her elbow. Her very soft elbow. “I’m not wearing a wire. But are you sure you want to know the truth about Doyle? I don’t know if you can handle it.”

She gawked at him and then at his lips. Her voice came out in a whisper. “Try me.”

He murmured in her ear, taking note of her lilac scent. “Well, I hear at midnight he sprouts black wings and horns. And he’s always searching for innocent maidens to add to his coven.” He bit on his bottom lip, suddenly wishing he was gnawing on hers.

At first, her eyelids did this fluttery thing that made his imported pants spring to life. But then she blinked and began to laugh. “And here I thought I was dealing with a mere businessman. I didn’t realize Doyle was cousins with Lucifer.”

“What’s your name?”

She regarded him from out of the side of her eye, her mouth still bearing the same flirty grin. “What’s yours?”

“Consider me a friend who wants to give you some advice.”

The smile disappeared from her face. “And what would that be?”

“Don’t mess with Liam Doyle. He doesn’t take to it kindly.”

The coquettish shine in her eyes hardened. “Is that a threat?”

“No, sugar. That’s not my style.”

“What exactly do you do here? Are you in security?”

“Never mind that.” He waved his hand. “Look, you’ve had your fun. Why don’t you run along home now?”

She reached for her sign and tucked it under her arm. “I will go where I damn well please. And you can tell your friend Mr. Doyle to expect me tomorrow. Maybe next time he’ll be brave enough to confront me himself.” She turned on her heel and walked down the manicured pathway leading to the taxi bay.

Liam stared at her ass as she walked away. Brave?

Game on, sugar. He’d show her brave.

Rosanna Leo’s Predator’s Fire, Book 5 in the Gemini Island Shifters series

predator'sfireoptI am thrilled to have Rosanna Leo here today sharing her newest book in her Gemini Island Shifters’ series. I have read all four of the previous books and loved them. I’ll be reading this one soon! Now, let’s hear from Rosanna as she shares about her newest paranormal romance, Predator’s Fire:

Thank you, Monette, for allowing me to visit and spend some time with you. I always love visiting.

I’m here as part of my blog tour to celebrate the release of Predator’s Fire, Gemini Island Shifters 5. This romance begins with a mystery. Human heroine Nina Suzuki comes upon her friend best Janine in very strange circumstances. I’m not giving too much away by saying Nina is forced to come to grips very quickly with Janine’s bizarre passing. All of a sudden, our plucky heroine is thrust into the world of shape shifters, never having dreamed they could exist.

Janine tells Nina to find the mysterious Killian Moon of the Ursa Resort on Gemini Island. According to her, he is the man with all the answers. Now Nina must convince the jaguar shifter hero to share his information about the world of shifters, in order to better understand why her friend died.

I never come right out and say it in the book, but I have a suspicion Janine might have been doing some stealthy matchmaking when she counseled Nina to seek out Killian. Perhaps she knew her human pal wouldn’t be able to resist his shifter charms. Perhaps she understood Nina needed a good man in her life. Perhaps she felt an enigmatic shifter man would be the one to help Nina experience new depths of pleasure.

Of course, Janine also understood Killian would be best equipped to save Nina in the coming battle with the villainous Alpha Brethren, a vicious cult of shifters determined to destroy the tranquility of Gemini Island. As a jaguar shifter, Killian possesses great strength, the ability to stalk his prey and the strongest bite of all the great cats.

Plus he’s also rather easy on the eyes.

Yes, in retrospect, I think poor Janine did Nina a great service in sending her to Killian. Their lives were changed for the better because of her matchmaking efforts. It was a final act of love from one friend to another.

I hope you have a chance to experience all the books in this series, and that Predator’s Fire finds its way to your TBR list.

When Nina Suzuki discovers the body of her best friend Janine, her world turns upside down. Things go from bad to worse when Janine’s corpse seems to transform into that of a large, brown wolf. For the first time, Nina is faced to confront all the clues indicating her BFF was not what she seemed. A letter from the dead woman opens Nina’s eyes to a strange, new world. The same letter warns of a sinister group called the Alpha Brethren, and urges her to find Killian Moon of the Ursa Fishing Lodge and Resort on Gemini Island.

Killian Moon is a jaguar shifter and teen mentor at the Ursa Lodge in Northern Ontario. He may be a comfort and inspiration to confused teen shifters, but he also has a fiery past. His past comes back to haunt him when human Nina arrives at the resort, demanding to speak with him. Demanding answers. Can he trust her with knowledge that will not only change her life, but possibly endanger those around him?

As Killian begrudgingly tutors Nina on all things shifter, their mutual curiosity flares into passionate need. Once they touch, once they succumb to desire, there is no going back. Killian realizes Nina is his mate and they both begin to comprehend the terror threatening those on their shifter-friendly island. He is forced to confront the tragedy in his family and determines to protect Nina at all costs.

But can they protect everyone they love from a cult of dangerous shifters, intent on horror and destruction?

“How much longer do I have to wait? I want to see Killian Moon. Now.”

The feminine voice, strangely soft despite its insistence, echoed deep in his being, awakening his jaguar. The great cat roared to life, turned toward the office and inhaled deeply. Its eyes flashed in interest.

Killian breathed in at the same time, catching the scent of cherry blossoms through the door. The sweet perfume, mixed with human outrage, proved a heady distraction, making him forget why he was there. Shaking his head, he tried to dismiss the odd sensation as Ryland opened the door.

The door swung open and the first person he glimpsed was one of the clerks from reception, trying his hardest to placate the unexpected guest. “I’m sure Mr. Snow and Mr. Moon will be right back.”

And then his gaze landed on the petite human. Tapered Asian eyes, so dark and mysterious, but rimmed with circles of exhaustion. Smooth, cinnamon skin hinted at a mixed background. Wearing no makeup, she appeared younger than she must be, but her presence and keen eyes pegged her at around thirty years old. She had a riot of curly, black hair and feminine curves that ought to come with a warning. He could see it now. Beware: this woman’s body will cause insanity in men. Even as she gesticulated at the clerk, her boobs jiggled in such a way his throat went dry.

He pictured her in a corset, her breasts spilling over delicate lace edging, and almost forgot his name.

This Nina Suzuki was damn hot and his jaguar seemed to agree. The animal licked its lips, its golden gaze assessing and appreciating every detail, from her rounded hips to her come-hither rack.

Yes, the creature uttered on a frenzied breath.

Rosanna Leo’s Predator’s Refuge

Predator's Refuge Cover

I want to welcome my friend, Rosanna Leo to my blog.  She has a new book in her Gemini  Island Shifters series coming out today.  I love this series (um, shifters, people!!) and I know you will too.

Thank you to Monette for hosting me today! I’m so excited to be here as it’s release day for me, and I couldn’t think of anyone I’d rather share it with.

Release days are probably the most exciting days for authors. Certainly, they are for me. It’s the day all our hopes and dreams for a book become reality. I can’t think of anything more thrilling than these moments…unless someone were to tell me my heroes just turned real and are waiting for me in the bedroom! Not likely to happen, I suppose.

When I set out to write my Gemini Island Shifters books, quite frankly, I did not anticipate a series. However, my publisher wisely suggested I attach a series name to the first book, and voila, the series was born. Predator’s Refuge, today’s release, marks the third book in the series. In my opinion, it is also boasts some of the sexier moments in the franchise.

Why is this one so sexy? Well, in throwing together this particular hero and heroine, it really felt as if the sexual tension had been kicked up a notch. You see, my heroine, a lynx shifter named Marci, is experiencing her first heat. She could have sex at the drop of a hat! However, her sex-crazed spirit animal seems to be on the lookout for a specific man.

When tiger shifter Anton Gaspar arrives on the scene, all hell breaks loose. Not only does Marci have to contend with some very unwanted emotions and desires, Anton also becomes prey to his voracious tiger. However, Anton fights his attraction to Marci for some unusual reasons. Will he manage to stay away from her? Gosh, we hope not!

Predator’s Refuge is available at www.lsbooks.com and will also be available at Amazon, ARE, B&N, Kobo and other e-outlets.

Lynx shifter Marci Lennox has worked at the shifter-friendly Ursa Fishing Lodge and Resort all her adult life. It’s more a home to her than a job. When her boss goes on vacation, putting her in charge, Marci is thrilled. Finally a chance to prove she has the mettle to run a resort.

Her confidence is shaken when new employee Anton Gaspar appears. One look at the mysterious tiger shifter spells trouble for Marci and for her sex-crazed lynx. Anton is judgmental, condescending, and a little misogynistic. Unfortunately, Marci’s lynx thinks his tiger is more delicious than an oversized bag of Maltesers.

It becomes difficult for Marci to remain neutral near Anton, especially when she learns of his troubling past and unusual family circumstances. However, when dangerous incidents occur on the resort, the lynx woman and tiger man join forces to combat the threat to the lodge and its guests.

Harder still is the quest to combat their explosive feelings for one another. As they explore their mutual passion, they realize the danger at the resort is more insidious than they ever envisioned. Their dreams, their love, and their very lives are at stake.

The sliding doors swung open for him and he walked in, head high.

Immediately, the fragrance hit him, activating his Jacobson’s organ. He swallowed, tasting it on his tongue and at the back of his throat, and wondered if he was mistaken.

No, how could he mistake the unique scent of a female cat in heat? It was too delicious a scent to forget. Sweetness coated his taste buds, winding a delirious path down his throat. As his head swam, he blinked and tried to clear his thoughts of the sexual imagery racing through it.

The scent did not belong to another tiger shifter, but some other type of predatory cat. One whose perfume he hadn’t sampled before. One who must be particular to this region. Cougar? No. Mountain lion? Surely not.

Whatever she was, her scent teased him with its delicious flavor.

Don’t, he warned himself. Wasn’t it enough that he spent the last few years of his existence trying to escape the sick wiles of the grasping women at court? And God only knew how hard he’d worked to maintain a state of abstinence at Pannonhalma, devoting his life to meditation. He’d come here to work, not lose himself in a sweet piece of…

Stop it. This was no time to think of pussy, even though he’d never been more desperate for a taste of creaming woman.

His tiger howled inside him, hungry for that which it had been denied for almost two years.

Still the perfume, more intoxicating than any he’d known, wafted toward him. He wanted to close his eyes and drink it in. The unyielding power of the aroma could make him forget his vows. Granted, he wasn’t really a monk, but he had followed the monastic lifestyle from day one at Pannonhalma. The purity in the monk’s life had been the very thing he’d required to get his life back on track.

So why did he want to find the source of the scent and fuck her until she begged alternately for mercy and for more? Her need seemed strong. Whoever this lady cat was, she must be in dire agony for her scent to be so powerful.

None of his business.

Mentally caging the growling tiger inside him, he shook his head and approached the front desk. He dropped his luggage and cleared his throat at the woman working there. Her head had been down as she read some reports, but she looked up now.

“Welcome to the Ursa…” Her jaw fell open and her sentence hung in the air, unfinished and clearly forgotten.

Well, well. A beautiful little lynx.

The scent of desire emanated from her. Only now, it flourished under his gaze, increasing tenfold, if such a thing could be measured. Tendrils of teasing perfume waved around her body, blending into the golden brown highlights in her hair and winding their way around her hips and breasts. Exuding from her pores and sinking straight into his. Delicious, sensual saturation.

Anton’s heart raced and his tiger spotted its new prey. The animal licked its lips.

Rosanna Leo Interviews Soren Snow

Predator's Serenade I’d like to say a big thank you to my pal Moni for hosting me today! I’m here to promote my new release Predator’s Serenade, book 2 of my Gemini Island Shifters series. I know Monette likes bear shifters, so to thank her, I brought one along.

Monette, I believe you’ve met Soren Snow. (Turns to the big, blond bear shifter) Soren, play nice.

Soren: (eyes Monette with appreciation and smiles) I always play nice. I’ll play extra nice with Ms. Michaels, if she’ll let me.

Rosanna: (bites lip, hoping Monette’s blush isn’t one of mortification) Please excuse him, Moni. Soren can come on a little strong at first, but he’s all heart. Aren’t you, Soren? (elbows the bear shifter in the ribs)

Soren : (doubling over) Right. All heart. Anywhere else you wanna hit me?

Rosanna: (smiling sweetly) Not right now, thanks. Now you’re a bear shifter and a famed rock star. I’d imagine blending these two worlds isn’t always easy for you.

Soren: You could say that. For many years, I muzzled my inner bear, for lack of a better term. When he threatened to misbehave, I just channeled his energy into misbehaving in much more exciting ways. (Arches a brow and allows gaze to roam over Moni’s legs)

Rosanna:  Stop looking at my friend’s legs.

Soren: (throws up hands) What? I appreciate beauty. That’s all.

Rosanna : Well, you didn’t appreciate my heroine Gioia’s beauty too much at the start of Predator’s Serenade. What was it you called her? A “little owl of a woman?”

Soren : (snickers) Oh, I appreciated Gioia just fine. (Gaze warms over) I appreciated her a lot more than I was willing to admit at first. Luckily my bear straightened me out quickly. Let’s just say he was a bit more straightforward in his thinking than I was. When he saw Gioia the first time, it was all I could do to stop him from charging her in lust. It was hard to keep a lid on him.

Rosanna: Which brings me to another point! Why are bear shifters so stubborn? You and your brother Ryland from Predator’s Kiss seem to suffer from the same affliction.

Soren: The shifter will always harbor some traits from their animal. Bears are, well, not always the most warm and fuzzy creatures. We’ve been known to get a little, um, ornery.

Rosanna:  (smiling devilishly) And has Gioia helped you with that little problem since you’ve mated?

Soren: (narrows eyes at pesky author type) I’d like to think we help each other in many delicious ways that I will never share with you. If I tell you anything, you crazy woman, it’ll all end up in another book. See what happened the first time I confided in you? I became part of a paranormal romance series!

Rosanna: Oh, you’re loving every minute of it. If it weren’t for my book, we’d never be able to come visit with lovely people like Moni.

Soren:  (turns to hostess with inviting grin) Speaking of Moni, what is your situation, darlin’?

Rosanna: She’s married! And you’re mated!

Soren: Kidding. Just kidding. You know I adore my Gioia. I’d do anything for that woman. (Stretches his long legs and stands). In fact, if it’s all the same to you ladies, I think I’m going to go cater to that wonderful woman right now. Since we mated, she’s become insatiable and I aim to cash in on some of that action right now. (Kisses Moni on the cheek, gives Rosanna a high-five and heads out the door.)

Rosanna : (looks at Moni, who has fallen off her stool) Moni? Moni? Damn, I knew she liked bear shifters a little too much.

There are three things that make bear shifter Soren Snow’s skin crawl: mothers, their children, and the great outdoors. Soren is a famed musician and playboy, and he would rather spend his days pressing the flesh with the women in his fan club than developing meaningful relationships. When his brother calls in a favor, forcing Soren to revisit the Ursa Fishing Lodge in Northern Ontario, he couldn’t be more displeased. However, he owes his brother big time.

Gioia Clementine would rather not meet Soren, her drummer son’s rock idol. But when tragedy strikes her home, it seems the only one the boy might respond to is Soren. Gioia begrudgingly agrees to let her son meet him, hoping the rock star won’t turn her tween into a musical misogynist.

When Gioia and Soren meet, the sexual chemistry threatens to set the Ontario woodland ablaze. Can these two opposites find a common ground? And can they manage to resolve their unwanted feelings, even when a mysterious stranger arrives at the lodge, threatening everything?

Gioia followed Soren’s approach with a curious eye. She’d wondered if the miracle kisser would beat a hasty retreat after witnessing her boy fall to pieces, and yet here he was. He wore the same famished look he had right before he’d ruined her for any other man’s kiss. And she felt it too. The tingles between her shoulder blade, the gelatin knees, and trembling lips that wanted to gobble him up.

She couldn’t. She didn’t want to saddle him with such a wreck of a woman or family.

He came right up to her, so close, as if making a mockery of the space that sought to separate them. Weaving his fingers through her hair, he cradled her skull and pulled her close. Tucking her head against his chest, he kissed the top of her head, blazing a trail of hot reaction down her spine. He had new clothes on and smelled fresh and clean. As she breathed him in, he rained soft kisses all over her head.

He knows.

She pulled away, suddenly terrified he’d think she was a travesty of a mother. It’s what anyone would think in his case. They’d wonder what Gioia had done wrong to create a monster child. But as she attempted to remove herself from his grasp, Soren fought her by holding her still. Again she tried jerking away from his wall of a chest. He held her firm.

When she tried two more times, each time unsuccessfully, he looked at her and shouted, “Dammit, woman, I am not letting you go, so you can stop pulling away from me!”

Something in Gioia broke. She’d been carrying her sadness around for so long, trying to be strong, and Soren was offering to be strong for her. For just a moment, maybe she could surrender. God only knew how badly she wanted to give herself to the bear man.

He grabbed her tighter, and his hands slid down to mold over her ass cheeks. His warm breath was all over her face, and she took a dizzying dive into the seas of his eyes. He ground her against him, and she was forced to stand on tip toes.

“Gioia,” he whispered.

She wound her arms about his tense neck, felt him tense further. Then … a sigh somewhere in his big frame and a relaxation in his muscles. As if he needed to have her wound about him. As if it soothed him as much as her.

“Soren. Please.”

As he kissed her, he picked her up, his hands under her bottom. Her miniskirt rode up, and she spared a second to mentally curse her decision to wear it. And then she didn’t care.

Kissing her madly, Soren spirited her into the woods.

A Love Letter to Kathy Love

I would like to thank Monette Michaels for allowing me to visit with her today to express my appreciation for the work of Kathy Love. Specifically, Ms. Love’s paranormal romance Truth or Demon.

I love this novel, and my love stems right from her very first words of the work –“Killian knew his screams.”

Was there ever a more evocative beginning to a novel? Even with the first few syllables, Kathy Love manages to hook the reader and draw her in. Now, if you hadn’t bothered to read the blurb on this insanely gorgeous book, you would begin to wonder. Whose screams? Why are these people screaming anyway? And why does this Killian seem to have a vivid understanding of what makes an effective scream?

The fact is Killian is a demon from the First Circle of Hell. Right away, the reader begins to envision fire and brimstone. One might even wonder if Killian is the bad guy in the piece. Read on, and discover that Killian has been summoned from Hell by a delirious trio of silly teenaged girls…thus the screams. You see, they’ve summoned him using an old spell, never dreaming it would work. And in doing so, the three girls have compelled him to do their bidding. As it happens, their goal is peculiar. One of them has an older sister named Poppy, and they feel Poppy needs a boyfriend. It is now the job of Killian, the fierce demon from the underworld, to find Poppy that boyfriend.

This is the simple and delightful premise of Truth or Demon. Kathy Love is an expert at comedic romance with a sexy flair. I love her juxtaposition of the sinister and the slapstick. In my opinion, this work is a comedic tour de force. I love how she thrusts her poor hero, who is doing his best to appear intimidating, into a world that throws him for a loop.

Think dark Alpha hero meets Lucille Ball.

The tension between Killian and Poppy begins on page one. As soon as the protective older sister discovers this strange man with the three younger girls, she brains him with a candlestick holder. Killian is forced to think on his feet, with little warning and little explanation on how he arrived on the scene. One of the girls calls him Killian O’Brien, her Swedish cousin, leading Poppy to wonder about the handsome stranger. Swedish?

Despite her reservations, Poppy agrees to show Killian around town. Using a very simple technique, Ms. Love forces her hero and heroine to spend time together and learn about each other. The laughs ensue on almost every page. There are references to Agnetha Faltskog of ABBA fame (a woman with the same name apparently left Killian at the altar, only to run off with the minister, according to the girls). And every time Killian tries to sympathize with the orphaned Poppy about her plight, he manages to say the wrong things, leading the girls to call him “a tool.”

Comedic genius.

However, I don’t just admire Ms. Love’s work because of the humorous elements. This book is dead sexy, too! I’ve read a lot of romance novels, but there is one scene that has remained with me for a couple of years now, haunting me with its stunning, sexual imagery. Poppy and Killian have gone to an art exhibit together. They’ve kissed a couple of times, and their attraction to each other is growing hard to fight. Feeling impulsive, Killian pulls Poppy by the hand and leads her to the roof of the building. There, with no one watching, he kneels before her and runs his hands up her legs, under her skirt and teases her panties down.

“Pull up your skirt for me, baby,” he said, his voice low, raspy with need.

Right there, Killian takes her in his mouth in a scene that still leaves me panting.

“She strained against his mouth, her body begging for release. But he didn’t give that to her. Not right away. He wanted to relish this. To taste her, to feel every quiver and shake of her body. To memorize her texture and heat against his tongue.”

Whew, is it getting hot in here?

Throw in ex-boyfriends and a more sinister demon, and you have a plot made in Heaven. Before long, Killian and Poppy know they are meant for one another. But how will they end? They are different types of people from highly different worlds. One of them is a sweet, awkward young mortal woman, and the other has Satan for a boss.

I won’t spoil the ending for you here. You’ll just have to read it for yourself. Rest assured, this is a story that will remain with you, as it has with me. I congratulate Kathy Love on her excellent novel and look forward to many, many more from this author.
