Former Prime sex surrogate Susa Anghard has never been off her planet, let alone out of the Cejuru solar system. While she isn’t naive about men and what they want, she isn’t prepared for the predatory males who now have her in their sights. When she’s kidnapped on her way to a galactic rim jump station to visit her cousin Borac, she has no expectations of being rescued. She vows to free herself or die trying.

When Borac Anghard asks Damon Martin to intercept his cousin Susa’s transport and escort her to their jump station, Damon agrees. When he arrives to meet Susa’s ship, he finds she’s been kidnapped by alien mercenaries. He goes in hot pursuit and prays he finds her before she’s delivered to the person who paid for the kidnapping.

When Damon catches up with the kidnappers, he hadn’t expected to find the resourceful Susa in the act of getting away. And he really hadn’t expected to be so attracted to her. An attraction that could go nowhere—she was his business partner’s cousin and Damon still wasn’t over losing the only woman he’d ever loved.

Take one alpha-male with a slightly broken heart, add in one Prime female finding her courage and self for the first time—throw them together in close quarters in a trip across the galaxy and love will find a way.

Want to read a SNEAK PEEK of Damon and Susa’s book?  Go here:  Prime Target Sneak Peek

Prime Target will go live on Monday, November 19, 2018 and will retail at $4.99.

It Started as a Joke and Became Our Mission

The first Pets in Space anthology started as a joke, a throwaway comment on Facebook, but Veronica Scot saw the potential of the idea and contacted me privately and said, “We should do this.”

I thought about it and realized she was right. We should do this, but we both had two requirements that had to happen if we did this.

  1. Awesome original stories (Veronica convinced some amazing authors to write stories for our adventure in space and publishing); and
  2. We had to donate a portion of the proceeds to a charity that is about animals and veterans.

It did not take us long to discover Hero-Dogs.org. We knew they were the charity for us, but would they be willing to partner with something called Pets in Space?

They did! And when we went back to them for Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2, we were so honored that they said yes again. Supporting this charity has definitely become our passion.

What is Hero Dogs you ask?

Hero Dogs, Inc., a Maryland 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, improves quality of life for our nation’s heroes by raising, training, and placing service dogs and other highly skilled canines, free of charge with lifetime support of the partnerships.

In addition to supporting a wonderful charity, Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2,  brings you a dozen original stories written just for you! Join in the fun, from the Dragon Lords of Valdier to a trip aboard award-winning author Veronica Scott’s Nebula Zephyr to journeying back to Luda where Grim is King, for stories that will take you out of this world! Join New York Times, USA TODAY, and Award-winning authors S.E. Smith, M.K. Eidem, Susan Grant, Michelle Howard, Cara Bristol, Veronica Scott, Pauline Baird Jones, Laurie A. Green, Sabine Priestley, Jessica E. Subject, Carol Van Natta, and Alexis Glynn Latner as they share stories and help out Hero-Dogs.org, a charity that supports our veterans!

10% of all pre-orders and the first month’s profits go to Hero-Dogs.org. Hero Dogs raises and trains service dogs and places them free of charge with US Veterans to improve quality of life and restore independence.

The authors of Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2 hope you’ll join with them in supporting our wonderful charity! You’ll get 12 great reads, all for the price of a cup of coffee! And please tell a friend!

Muse Wednesday: Cynthia Sax

Lord Of ScoundrelsI am thrilled to have author Cynthia Sax sharing her muse with us today.  It’s so much fun to find other authors who like the same books — Lord of Scoundrels is one of my favorite Loretta Chase books and is a go-to, re-read, comfort book for me. So please join me in welcoming Cynthia to the blog as she shares why she chose this particular book as an inspiration for her writing. — Monette

**********************

I’ve been inspired by a zillion different authors. Barbara Cartland was my first introduction to romance. Christine d’Abo was my first introduction to erotic romance. Laurann Dohner was my first introduction to both SciFi erotic romance and stories with cyborg heroes (which is the niche Releasing Rage falls into).

But there’s one romance novel that I reach for whenever I feel a fit of the lazies, whenever I think ‘this story is tight enough’, and that’s Loretta Chase’s Lord Of Scoundrels.

Lord Of Scoundrels, a Regency romance, is a tight book. There’s not one throwaway scene in the story. Every scene is important. Every scene has multiple meanings. There are motifs and symbolism and very few wasted words.

The prologue is a flashback of the hero’s early life, specifically his hellion days at school. He’s not a teenager. He’s a very naughty little boy. Then, in the first chapter, we meet the heroine. She’s confronting her much larger brother, taking him to task for his behavior. He responds as a naughty little boy might and we KNOW she’s someone who won’t take any backchat from the hero (foreshadowing). She not only will challenge the hero but she’ll understand him.

And yes, I said prologue. Many editors hate prologues. I’ve never had one survive to final copy. Not having a prologue is one of those unspoken writer ‘rules’ yet here is one in the book I use as a benchmark for writing. It is needed. It adds value to the story. It proves that every rule can be broken if we do it well enough.

Lord Of Scoundrels also shows that every action can be acceptable as long as the character’s motivation is strong enough. Dain, the hero, is a terrible person. He doesn’t miraculously improve by the end of the story either. He stays true to his rather difficult nature. But we understand why he’s a terrible person and we understand why Jess grows to love him.

Shocking things happen in this story. They have a reason for happening. They aren’t merely a means to surprise the reader. But Loretta Chase ‘goes there’. She didn’t soften the story to be more marketable.

Lord Of Scoundrels is circular storytelling (which is one reason why the prologue is so important). It starts with a very naughty little boy and ends with a very different naughty little boy. Circular storytelling is a favorite construct of mine. It’s extremely powerful and I often use it.

This book is a basis for my mental revision checklist. I ask myself ‘Is this scene necessary? Can this scene do more? Can I use symbolism effectively here? How can I make this object or phrase or article of clothing mean something in my story? Can I make this character more intense? Is he or she true to his or her nature? Am I being authentic or am I making him or her ‘nicer’ in hopes that the book will be more marketable? Do I ‘go there’ and do I ‘go there’ for a storytelling reason, not simply to shock readers?”

Have you read Lord Of Scoundrels? What did you love about it?

A Prime Chronicles Short Story- Prime Claiming is NOW OUT!

MM_TPC_PrimeClaiming_300x400 Yes, just in time for the Holiday Season — a Prime Chronicles Short Story.

When I was writing Prime Imperative, I had many fans asking whether there would be more stories in the Prime Chronicles world after I finished the third book.  I had never really thought beyond the end of the third book, but with all the outpouring of love from my Prime fans, I decided to set it up so I could continue to write in this world for at least another trilogy.

This short story is not part of the next trilogy, but more of a scene that occurred off-stage in the third book. Hey, I was inspired. 🙂 Cheri has such a large personality and I wanted to see how Zaek would handle it.  I hope you all agree he handled Cheri very well.

The action in Prime Claiming takes place during the action in Prime Imperative between Chapter 14, which was on the Galanti on the way to Cejuru Prime after picking up Bria’s team from the planet Oz, and before Chapter 15, about a week after they had arrived on Cejuru Prime.

Blurb:

Warriors from the planet Prime are renowned throughout the galaxy for their strength and fighting ability. And when they meet their mate, they bond for life.

Like all Prime males, Lieutenant Zaek Magga had searched forever for his mate…but he never expected her to be a Terran. Unfortunately, no Terran would be prepared for the reality of the carnal bonding process between a Prime male and his chosen mate. He decides to move very slowly.

Cheri Stafford never expected to be a Prime warrior’s mate. But she is. At first, she’s thrilled, then…confused. After seeing how other Prime males act with their mates, Cheri doesn’t understand why Zaek is holding her at arm’s length. Doesn’t he want her? He hasn’t even kissed her properly.

But when Cheri uses all her womanly wiles to get Zaek to move, she discovers how thoroughly an extremely dominant male warrior will claim his female.

******

As for the trilogy, it will begin with Damon and Susa’s story for the romance arc. There will be a subplot which will carry continue through the trilogy, involving tracking down the exact toxin that harmed Prime females’ immune system and caused the infertility/miscarriage issues that were crucial in the first trilogy.  The subplot will also focus on discovering and bringing to justice the Prime medical researchers and doctors who assisted the man behind the plot to destroy the Prime race (no spoilers here, but if you’ve read the third book you know who the evil mastermind was). Of course, this search into what and who will bring with it danger — and Susa has information she doesn’t know she has. And Damon will be forced to protect her since the trouble follows her to his jump station.

But all that is for later.

When exactly?  After I finish my next SSI book, Storm Warning.  So, patience please.  🙂

Blurb for Prime Imperative:

Adopted and raised by Terrans, Dr. Brianna Martin never quite fit in. She’s thrilled to learn she’s a long-lost female of the Prime race. And that she has a mate living somewhere on the planet Cejuru Prime—one genetically destined to be hers alone. Before she figures out how to approach him, she’s attacked in her research lab.

Iolyn Caradoc is stunned at the news that his mate, matched to him soon after birth, still lives.  Even more amazing, she’s a research scientist on the verge of discovering why the Prime race is dying. But Pure Blood fanatics are trying to kill her and she’s on the run.  Every primal instinct in him insists he find, claim, and protect his mate. But the woman won’t stay put.

When Bria finally meets Iolyn, she’s thrilled. He’s everything she could want—physically strong, highly intelligent, and … the other half of her soul.  Yet, he’s also an overwhelmingly dominant and stubborn Prime warrior who wishes to protect her from everything—including her own Prime nature. As a Prime battle-mate, she has newfound instincts and skills—skills that will make her a true warrior. Skills she fully intends to learn and use.

If she manages to survive.

Excerpt:

Dr. Brianna Martin eyed her target and took careful aim. She nailed the male figure right between the eyes.

“Yay! See if you can beat that, my friend.” Bria happy-danced her way toward the life-sized, pseudo-reptilian male anatomy chart and pulled her scalpel from the kill zone in the frontal lobe. “Did I forget to mention I was med school scalpel-throwing champion three years in a row? Looks like you get to buy dinner.”

There was no response from her research assistant Cheri Stafford. Instead she heard a gasp and the sound of Cheri moving quickly away from their impromptu contest venue.

Primordial instincts Bria rarely had to rely upon in the medical world went on alert, sharpening her empathic abilities. Something dangerous headed their way. It smelled like a hot, fierce wind off a desert. She tasted the dustiness of it on her tongue and felt it flaying her skin. She hurried toward her friend, who stood in the entrance to the lab. “Cheri? What’s wrong?”

“Red alert!” Her friend growled the words as she made a move to cut off whoever approached.

Bria peered around her friend and saw her nemesis, Jotak M’tali.

Jotak, the chief of security for the research facility, strode down the long corridor in his ruler-of-the-planet, owner-of-all-he-surveyed mode.

“Really? Now? Doesn’t that…that…” freaking, scary, creep-a-zoid “…man understand the meaning of the word no?” As in never, no way, no how, ever in the infinite future of possibilities.

Blurb:

Melina Dmitros is a seasoned battleship captain for the Galactic Alliance. Calls from ships in distress are not all that uncommon in the outermost spirals of the Milky Way. Calls from the warlike Prime were. Now that they were allies, Mel figures she’d better get used to working in conjunction with the chauvinistic race. She never expected to be attracted to one of them.

The Prime, one of the oldest species in the galaxy, were known for going their own way. But with problems on Cejuru Prime and increasing attacks by the Antareans, the Prime joined the Alliance to lend their expertise in battling the warlike reptilian species–and ultimately, to survive as a race.

Captain Wulf Caradoc, the eldest son and heir apparent of the Prime leader, looked forward to the trip to the Alliance ambassadorial planet. His mission is ostensibly to deliver the diplomatic team to the new Prime embassy. His real mission is to meet his fated mate, his gemate, one of the Lost Ones. Wulf hadn’t anticipated the diplomatic mission being attacked by pirates–and he especially hadn’t anticipated his gemate, Melina Dmitros, being the one sent to rescue his ship.

Two strong people pulled together by biology and fate. Their union will be forged in a crucible of survival, treachery and duty.

Now that you know what the book is all about.  Settle back and enjoy the excerpt.  And don’t forget to comment to get a chance to win a FREE download of this book.

EXCERPT from PRIME OBSESSION, Book 1 of  the Prime Chronicles:

Well-rested after a solid seven hours of sleep, Mel entered the Captain’s conference room in search of Wulf.

He sat alone. Beyond him the expansive port window framed a fiery red, blue, white and peach display of a star cluster in a nebula thousands of light-years behind the Galanti.MM_PC1_PrimeObsession_240x360

How many times had he sat in the observation area, watching as the galaxy whizzed by? How many times had he sat in that chair, attempting to figure a way out of a tight corner? How many times had he questioned his place in the grand scheme of things, wondering when his number might come up and if he would live to see another mission?

“Too many times to count, gemate. Too many damn times.”

He turned and smiled at her. What had put that smile on his face? With a light mental touch, she read his emotions. Happiness. Love. Both emotions were tied to her–only her.

A sense of well-being swept over her. This was right; they were right.

He held out a hand, beckoning her to join him. “I now have more to fight for. To live for. I have you and our future together. So, I expect that I will find myself in this chair, watching the galaxy whiz by many more times.”

Mel walked over and kissed him lightly on the lips. “But no longer alone.”

“Yes,” he whispered against her mouth. “No longer alone. Forgive me for my loss of control earlier?”

She pulled away from the luscious warmth of his mouth then leaned against the arm of his chair. “Nothing to forgive. We still have much to learn of each other. We are both used to being in control, to acting as we see fit. It’s a learning curve, this battle-mate relationship.”

She stroked the back of his sinewy hand with one finger. “More like a learning cliff. The biological connection is there and has been ever since that moment we first met in the maintenance tunnel. For me, the emotional connection has been there also, almost from the beginning–though I tried to deny it.” She shook her head, laughing at herself. “I didn’t trust it, at first. It’s the psychological connection, the learned trust, I have the most trouble dealing with. Sharing command decisions goes against all my training and experience. But, I know that it, too, will come.”

Wulf reversed the grip she had on his hand and brought hers to his lips. “Thank you. I’m not sure I deserve your understanding, but I’m grateful for it.” He rubbed his cheek against her hand. “For me, it is the emotional connection that is overwhelming. Intellectually, I know you are strong and capable, but my fears for your safety override my brain and I react emotionally. I’ve never had that happen before. I will try to overcome the issue, but it might take time. Prime males have deeply rooted protective instincts when it comes to their mates, even strong battle-mates. Have patience with me?”

“Always. You’re worth the trouble,” she teased. Pulling her hand away, she cupped his jaw and stole another kiss.

His eyes glowed with love as he reached for her face and took control of the kiss. His tongue swept into her mouth and claimed every single millimeter like the conquering warrior he was. It was a kiss that promised hot nights on cool sheets. And even hotter, sultry afternoons of tangled sweaty limbs.

Mel moaned, returning the kiss, trying to get closer to the promise of passion.

The quarter-hour reminder of yellow alert status sounded, startling them both.

Groaning, Wulf pulled away and whispered, “Later, gemate.”

Sitting back in his chair, his molten gaze traveled over her, setting her nerves ablaze. One look from Wulf was worth more than all the foreplay any other male of her acquaintance had ever attempted.

“You are rested?” His voice was husky with restrained heat.

Taking a calming breath, Mel walked to his other side and sat down. “Yes.” Answering his unspoken question, she added, “My cuts and bruises were minor. I’m fine.”

Another of his heated searching glances and, then, a light mental touch had her pulling up the maintenance report on the status of the weapons systems to distract him from his intimate examination of her wellbeing. “I’m fine, Wulf. How’s the weapons’ recharge going?”

A disbelieving grunt was his only response.

Obviously, she hadn’t masked the lingering pain from the injuries she’d obtained during her EVI walk. If she could have, she would’ve denied all injury. But he’d seen the evidence in the EVI staging area and, later, after he’d escorted her back to their quarters. Once there, the doctor quickly examined her, efficiently wielding the ice gun on her bruises and lasering her lacerations and abrasions.

Wulf had stood over them both, alternately cursing each hurt as it was revealed, then lecturing her on the prime importance of her safety for his mental health and the ultimate well-being of every single crew member–for every living being in the galaxy. Then he’d dismissed the doctor and tucked her in bed. As he kissed her, he had pressure-injected her with a sleeping agent which had put her under for over six and a half standard hours.

The sneaky bastard.

She would’ve done the same for him. They really did think alike. She grinned.

Still working on shifting Wulf’s attention back to work and away from her physical status, she commented, “Looks as if we’re still at least five standard hours away from full power on the two forward weapons and two standard hours on the aft.”

“They are making progress.” Wulf caressed her left hand as it hovered over the keypad. “When we get to Tooh 10, let’s take some time, visit Maren at the embassy on Tooh 2. Maybe stay at the resort for some rest and relaxation, and what the Terrans call a honeymoon.”

She smiled and turned her hand up to clasp his. “That sounds like a plan.”

The Alien Has Been Named!

MM_TPC3_PrimeImperative  Congratulations to Margaret S. !!

My son chose her entry for naming the scavenger-pile-of-rags-looking creature in my next Prime book, Prime Imperative (still being written — patience, please.)

The pile of rags creature will be officially known as “wefiantooth” or weaver tooth in Galactic Standard.  It is a spider-plant hybrid from Jangalweorld in the Mu Area solar system (where Tooh 2 and Tooh 10 are located).  And my son modified one of Margaret’s nicknames into “ragbug,” because it was descriptive and not too cute. He’s a guy. 🙂

Margaret, I will e-mail you to find out how you’d like to be acknowledged in my book.  You’ll receive an advanced review copy of the PDF (when the book is done and fully edited) from which the other e-book formats are created.  This means other than my beta-readers, crit partners, and editors, you’ll have it before anyone else. 🙂

Thanks to all the other entries.  I really enjoyed the participation and creativity of all of you.
